Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami: Which Is Better To Visit?
Planning A Trip To Florida And Wondering Where Exactly To Visit, But Need More Info On Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami?
After living in both the South Florida and Central Florida areas, these are all the details I think you should know to help you decide where to visit between Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami, and whether or not you should add all three to your next Florida vacation.
๐งณ Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami

Despite all being in the Central to South Florida area, Tampa, Orlando, and Miami are all very different places to visit, so if you’re trying to decide whether or not to go to one vs the other, or just what destinations you should add to your next Florida trip, here are more details to help you with your planing.
Which Do I Prefer
Personally if I had to choose to visit one vs the other, I would definitely narrow it down between Miami and Orlando over Tampa, and although it’s difficult for me to choose between those two depending on the mood I’m in, I would probably go with Miami because I love the Caribbean/tropical feel of this city.
Which Is Best For Families
Overall, I would say that Orlando or Tampa would be best for families (Miami can be good but there are just a lot more non-family friendly things about this city), but Orlando definitely has the better attractions so it would probably be best for a family trip (although not a very budget-friendly one).
Which Is Best For First Time Visitors
If it’s your first time visiting Florida, Orlando is probably the best and most exciting place to visit with all the theme parks, but Miami is also a really fun coastal city so I would definitely recommend one of these two vs Tampa.
๐ฆ Why Visit Tampa

Although there are a lot of interesting and beautiful places to visit in Florida, here are a few reasons why you might want to choose Tampa vs Orlando, Miami, or any other part of the state:
- ๐ค The Cost – compared to Miami or Orlando, Tampa is one of the cheaper destinations to visit, at least during certain times of the year (off season in the summer and fall)
- ๐ฆ The Attractions – Tampa isn’t the most exciting city in Florida in my opinion, but there are a still a few interesting sites around like the famous Tampa Zoo, the zoo/theme park Busch Gardens, Clearwater Beach and the Marine Aquarium, and all the professional sports like the NFL Buccaneers, the MLB Rays, or the NHL Lightning team
- ๐๏ธ Some Nearby Places – while Tampa has a few fun sites within the city, some interesting nearby places to visit include Anna Maria Island (my favorite west Florida coast beach), Gibsonton (the old circus town), Sarasota (also an old circus area and a popular wintering destination), Poppos Taqueria (one of my favorite organic Mexican food places), and Venice Beach (where you can find fossilized shark teeth)
- ๐ฅ Fewer Crowds – in comparison, Tampa also has way fewer crowds of visitors during the summer and fall months
๐ข Why Visit Orlando

Although quite a few cities in Florida are pretty well known around the world, the most famous and possibly most visited is Orlando, and you might entirely want to choose this city vs Miami or Tampa for two reasons:
- ๐ข Theme Parks – the best and most popular reason for visiting Orlando is definitely the theme parks like Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World (plus there are other nearby amusement parks and fun special events like Halloween Horror Nights)
- ๐ Other Interesting Nearby Attractions – although the theme parks are the main draw for Orlando, there are quite a few other interesting nearby sites/activities like hiking, the Everglades, Cocoa Beach, the Kennedy Space Center (where you can see a real rocket launch), or even the historic town of St Augustine
๐ฆฉ Why Visit Miami

Although it’s a huge major city with a few downsides like costs, some unsafe areas/things, and some rowdy crowds (particularly spring breakers), a few reasons why Miami might be a better choice vs Orlando or Tampa include:
- ๐จ๐บ History & Culture – one of my favorite things about Miami is how diverse it is here and how much Caribbean influence is all around; by far one of the biggest influences is that of Cuba and the fun area of Little Havana is a great place to see and learn more about this culture and history
- ๐ Interesting Attractions/Events – Miami is a big city with lots of interesting sites to see and things to do like the Everglades, going sailing in the bay or on a jet boat ride, visiting the historic Vizcaya Museum or the Ancient Spanish Monastery, relaxing at a beautiful clear blue water beach, seeing the colorful Wynwood Walls, or experiencing some professional sports like the MLS Inter Miami team (you can still see Messi!), the NFL Dolphins, the MLB Marlins, the NBA Heat, or the NHL Panthers
- ๐๏ธ Coastal Climate – somewhat unlike the Central Florida locations, Miami has a much better coastal climate, so although there is still a lot of humidity and heat, there’s usually a pretty nice coastal breeze
- ๐ช Nearby Places – Miami is definitely great, but nearby you can also reach some interesting places like Fort Lauderdale (right next to Miami), Key West (where you can see the only living coral reef in the continental US), or Palm Beach County (which includes places like Jupiter, West Palm Beach, and Palm Beach Gardens)
๐ค Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami: Should You Visit All 3?

If you have the time and the budget to visit all three of these destinations in Florida, then definitely go for it because there are fun and interesting things to do in all of these locations.
Having lived in Orlando and close to Miami, those two are more of my favorites vs Tampa, but I’ve enjoyed exploring all three of these areas so I definitely think they can all be worth visiting.
๐ Sum Up: Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami
If you’re planning a trip to Florida and are trying to decide between visiting Tampa vs Orlando vs Miami and you don’t have time or interest in checking out all three, I’d say visit Miami for a fun coastal Caribbean-feeling city, visit Orlando for an exciting theme park packed trip, or visit Tampa for a more relaxed and cheaper west coast vacation, but no matter where you choose to go, have fun and get outdoors in this beautiful sunshine state.
