Thinking About Visiting Venice, Florida And Wondering If It Is Really The Shark Tooth Capital Of The World?
When I was living in South Florida (Palm Beach Gardens specifically), I took a trip over to Venice Beach because I’d read about how easy it was to find shark teeth over here, and while it is known as the shark tooth capital of the world, I didn’t have the easiest time finding them, at first.

After spending a weekend here and finally finding a bunch of shark teeth (about 60-70 of them), I would say that Venice, Florida is definitely the shark tooth capital of the world in my opinion.
After a quick web search though of places around the world with lots of shark teeth, Venice, Florida is usually included at the top of the list, but there are a few others up there too that could also potentially be considered “the shark tooth capital of the world”.
➡️ Because of all the shark teeth, the fewer crowds (in offseason), and the usually lovely Florida weather, I think Venice is definitely a place worth visiting for at least a couple of days
🦈 Why Are There So Many Shark Teeth In Venice Beach, Florida?
Venice, Florida sits on top of a large fossil layer that gets churned up by waves and storms, so no matter when you go or how many times you go, you can find so many different kinds of shark teeth here.
Why Are The Teeth Black?
The shark teeth in Venice, Florida are usually black (or sometimes a light to dark brown color) because they’re fossilized and at least 10,000 years old.
When I was in Venice Beach, I read that the teeth here are estimated to be around 10 million years old.
What Kind Of Shark Teeth Are They?
You can find all different kinds of shark teeth in Venice, Florida, from small Mako sharks to the huge (extinct) Megalodon sharks, and there are a few ways you can try to identify them:
- guidebooks are sold all around Venice, Florida to help you identify the shark teeth you find
- there are even apps to help identify shark teeth, but they don’t scan, they just show and compare teeth
- to identify the age, you have to know the age of the sediments where the tooth was found (Venice is estimated at around 10 million years old)
- there’s also the free option from the kids menu at Sharky’s on the Pier (it has a few pictures and descriptions of teeth)
🛠 How To Find Teeth In Venice, Florida (The Shark Tooth Capital Of The World)
I have a much more detailed explanation of how to find shark teeth in Venice Beach, Florida here, but here’s a little summary of how to find teeth in the “potential” shark tooth capital of the world:
- walk in the sand and search for teeth among the shells (I think this is harder and I didn’t find any this way, but you might get lucky)
- dig in the shallow water where the waves crash using a good shovel and sifter (this is where I found 99% of my teeth, but it took me a minute to get used to spotting them, then I couldn’t stop)
- go on a deep ocean dive to search for teeth at the bottom of the seafloor (you could potentially find Megalodon teeth down there)
Do You Have To Have A Permit To Collect Shark Teeth Here?
Florida does have many laws on collecting certain kinds of fossils and which ones you have to leave where they are, but shark teeth can be collected without any permit here in Venice Beach, Florida.

Although there are a few other locations around the world where you might find a bunch of shark teeth, Venice, Florida is a great place to search for fossilized teeth so I think it’s fair to refer to it as the shark tooth capital of the world. It’s particularly good after a storm churns up the waters, but no matter when you go or how many times you go, you could always find something new and exciting in Venice.
