Is It Better To Stay In Fort Worth Or Dallas Texas?
Planning A Trip To North Texas And Wondering If It’s Better To Stay In Fort Worth Or Dallas For Your Vacation?
I lived in the North Texas area for a few years and I’ve visited and stayed in both of the Dallas and Fort Worth areas before, and while I have a personal preference between the two, it does depend on what you plan to do during your trip and what kind of transportation you want to use to determine which is going to be the better place to stay.
🤠 Is It Better To Stay In Fort Worth Or Dallas, Texas?

Although both Dallas and Fort Worth are basically one large city now, the centers of the two cities are still about 40-45 minutes apart (depending on traffic), so depending on your travel plans, you might find that one is a better place for you to stay.
🐂 Why It’s Better To Stay In Fort Worth, Texas

I’ve always loved visiting Fort Worth because I love going to the stockyards and watching rodeos, bull riding, or even the cattle drive, but here are a few other reasons why you might prefer to stay here over Dallas:
- compared to Dallas, Fort Worth is a little less crowded and hectic even in the downtown area
- Fort Worth is closer to a few of my favorite day trips that you can take around the North Texas and southern Oklahoma area (like Dinosaur Valley State Park, Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, or Fort Richardson State Park)
- Fort Worth is usually quite a bit cheaper, especially when there are big events going on, like Cowboys games at the AT&T stadium in Arlington
- the stockyards are one of the best attractions to see in the entire North Texas area (and a main reason I think Fort Worth is worth visiting), so if you stay in Fort Worth, you’ll be really close or right in them

➡️ If you need help deciding when to visit Fort Worth, here is a guide to the best times to travel here depending on weather, prices, or crowds
💙 Why It’s Better To Stay In Dallas, Texas

Although I would probably prefer staying in Fort Worth because I like any amount of fewer crowds that I can get, Dallas is the more popular place to stay because:
- the downtown Dallas area has the biggest amount of attractions, like museums, historical sites (especially JFK-related), zoos, reunion tower, and much more
- in the downtown area, you don’t have to have a car because it’s pretty walkable, and if you do want to go out and explore other places from downtown Dallas (like the Fort Worth stockyards) you can find plenty of guided tours that will leave out of this area
- if you’re flying into Dallas Love Field, the downtown Dallas area is very close so it should be a short and somewhat cheap Uber ride; DFW is a little further away, but it’s still closer to Dallas than it is to Fort Worth
- it could just be me, but when I was living here it felt like most of the storms came from the west (whether that was northwest, southwest, or just straight west) so it felt like Fort Worth always got them, while they would sometimes miss Dallas or not be quite as strong

🏨 Are There Any Better Places To Stay In North Texas?

If you have a car, I’d actually recommend staying out away from either of these two cities, because I personally prefer to be out away from downtown areas. If you’re like me, you might want to check out some of these other areas around North Texas:
- 🎩 Highland Park – very close to downtown Dallas but a very affluent, fancy, and nice area
- ⛑ Plano – where I lived and is generally considered one of the safest areas, plus it’s got it’s own mini downtown in the Legacy West & East areas
- ⚽️ Frisco – one of the farthest neighborhoods from Dallas or Fort Worth, but this is where the FC Dallas soccer team plays and the Dallas Stars hockey team practices
- 🎄 Grapevine – one of the cutest little neighborhoods in North Texas, famous for its Christmas time festivities and the hometown of singer Post Malone, plus it has a vintage train that runs between it and the Fort Worth Stockyards
- 🤑 Southlake – one of the richest areas in this North Texas area and a little closer to Fort Worth
- ✈️ Las Colinas – a big business area very close to DFW but easily reachable by the metro train and a pretty nice area that even has gondola rides through the canals
➡️ Looking for a few unique things to see in the Dallas-Fort Worth area? the grave of supposed JFK assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, is located in Fort Worth along with the famous golfer Ben Hogan, and the graves of Bonne and Clyde are located in Dallas
🔁 Sum Up: Is It Better To Stay In Fort Worth Or Dallas, Texas?
If I was going to choose between Fort Worth and Dallas, I would probably choose Fort Worth because it’s a little cheaper, less crowded, and close to the Stockyards (which I love), but Dallas is close to all the events, attractions, and airports so it might be a good fit for you depending on what you plan to do. I’d actually suggest a few other locations out away from the cities (like Grapevine or Plano) if you’re visiting with a car.
