Best Great Pyramid Of Cholula Tours (Or Do You Even Need One?)
Looking For The Best Tours To Take Of The Great Pyramid Of Cholula Or Wondering If You Even Need One?
I visited Mexico City for the first time over a decade ago and I continue to return because I love it so much, each time going out to explore new nearby areas like the interesting historical town of Cholula. If you’re planning to visit Cholula to see the Great Pyramid, below are the best tours you can choose from and a guide on whether or not you can visit it on your own.
🇲🇽 Best Tours Of The Great Pyramid Of Cholula

Although there are plenty of tours to take to see the Great Pyramid of Cholula, not all are rated the highest, so these are a few better options, with some leaving out of Mexico City:
- Epic Journey Private Puebla & Cholula Tour – private full day tour from Mexico City and the best most convenient option in my opinion; 4.9 rating on Viator and 4.9 on TripAdvisor
- Amigo Tours Puebla, Cholula, & Tonantzintla – full day trip from Mexico City; 4.5 rating on Viator and 4.5 on TripAdvisor
- Trekzy Cholula & Puebla Tour – full day trip from Mexico City; 4.4 rating on Viator and 4.4 on TripAdvisor
- Viajes Caravan Cholula Tour – half day tour of Cholula from Puebla; 4.8 rating on Viator and 4.8 on TripAdvisor
- Mexico Vivo Experiences Private Cholula Tour – half day private tour of Cholula; 4.9 rating on TripAdvisor
➡️ I’m a history nerd so I definitely think Cholula is worth visiting, but the pyramid is really the only thing to see in Cholula
🛕 Do You Even Need A Tour Of The Great Pyramid Of Cholula?

A tour of the Great Pyramid of Cholula definitely makes things easier, especially if you’re coming from Mexico City and/or you don’t speak much Spanish (this area is not as commonly traveled by foreigners), but it is also completely doable on your own.
When I visited the Cholula pyramid, I went on my own from Mexico City, but I do speak some Spanish so it was a little easier for me.
🚶 How To Tour The Great Pyramid Of Cholula On Your Own

If you don’t want to be restricted by one of those tours to the Great Pyramid of Cholula, here is exactly what I did to get to the pyramid from Mexico City:
- start at a Mexico City bus terminal (I stayed at the airport so I used that one)
- ride the bus for about 2 hours to the city of Puebla
- take a 20 minute taxi or Uber (the safer option) ride to the Great Pyramid
- get dropped off on the north side of the pyramid near The Cholula Museum
- buy pyramid tickets off of this street and purchase the optional Spanish-speaking tour guide
- visit the museum across the street first before exploring the pyramid
- return to where you bought the tickets and go inside of the Great Pyramid of Cholula (this tunnel was my favorite part, but it could be bad for those with claustrophobia ⬇️)

- outside of the tunnel walk to the south, towards the main entrance, but before going in, turn left and head east to see the Cholula letters
- go back to the main entrance and explore the outside pyramid areas (don’t miss walking all the way back to see the largest portion of exposed pyramid)
- return to the main entrance and then turn left to walk up to the top of the Great Pyramid of Cholula (most of it’s still covered, but it’s possible to walk up to what would be considered the top)
- halfway up get photos of the distant volcanoes (Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl), and all the way up see the 16th century church (built on top of the pyramid) and views of Puebla
🔁 Sum Up: Great Pyramid Of Cholula Tours
Taking one of these tours to the Great Pyramid of Cholula is definitely the easiest way to visit especially if you’re coming from Mexico City and/or you don’t speak much Spanish. Even the tours from Mexico City are not overly expensive compared to similar day trip excursions in other countries, so I would definitely recommend taking one for the stress-free experience, but if you prefer to not be restricted by a tour, visiting the Great Pyramid of Cholula is completely doable on your own.
