Planning Your Trip To Mexico City And Wondering What Areas Are Safe Here And Which Hotels To Stay At In Each Of Them?

Mexico City is one of my favorite places to visit, plus I’m a young-looking female that’s always concerned with safety, so although Mexico City has its dangerous areas, there are plenty of safe neighborhoods to choose from here and lots of good hotel options for all budgets.

➡️ My Top Pick: I love the Coyoacán and Polanco neighborhoods (two safe areas in Mexico City) and I recommend the Ágata Hotel or the Hyatt Regency in these areas

⭐ Quick Guide To Safe Hotels In Mexico City

📍Safest Location: Hyatt Regency Hotel
🤑 Most Budget-Friendly: Casa Corp Boutique Suites Hotel
🔝 Luxury: Four Seasons Hotel
🛕 Most Historical: Gran Hotel Ciudad de México
🇲🇽 Authentic: Ágata Hotel Boutique & Spa
✈️ Closest To The Airport: Courtyard by Marriott

➡️ Tip: I’ve stayed in both Airbnb’s and hotels in Mexico City, but I recommend hotels over Airbnb’s because they feel much safer and things don’t constantly stop working (i.e. toilet + shower) like my CDMX Airbnb experiences

🏨 Safe Areas In Mexico City (+ The Best Hotels In Each)

These are some safe areas where you can stay in Mexico City, and while there are a few other safe pockets around town, visitors really shouldn’t stay in any other neighborhoods (especially the more dangerous areas of Doctores, Tepito, Lagunilla, Nezahualcoyotl, and Iztapalapa).

Polanco

I call the Polanco area, the Beverly Hills of CDMX.

Polanco is the best and most upscale neighborhood in Mexico City (I call it the Beverly Hills of CDMX), and although it is the most expensive part of the city (and you’ll get the tourist fares for taxis and Ubers here), it’s probably the safest area for tourists.

Best Safe Hotels In Polanco:

  • Hyatt Regency Mexico City
    • 5 ⭐️ hotel
    • $160-270 average price range
    • great hotel for first time visitors because the concierge is super helpful, there’s a lot of English speaking staff, water bottles are provided (you want to be careful with water here), there’s English TV, a car service from the airport, and beautiful park views
  • Sofitel Mexico City Reforma (nearby)
    • 5⭐️ hotel
    • $300-740 average price range
    • one of the most luxurious hotels in Mexico City and a safe choice near the Angel of Independence

La Condesa/Roma

The Lo Condesa and Roma neighborhoods are the more hip, party neighborhoods for tourists.

The La Condesa and Roma areas sit right next to each other just on the other side of Chapultepec park from the Polanco area. They’re busier, nosier, party areas that are very popular for tourists, but still require being cautious and aware of your surroundings.

Best Safe Hotels In La Condesa/Roma:

  • Casa Corp Boutique Suites
    • 5⭐️ hotel
    • $90-120 average price range
    • busier tourist area still requiring caution (mostly pickpockets), but even solo female travelers generally feel safe here
    • rooms are private apartment style with their own kitchens
  • UTOPIC Roma Norte by ULIV
    • 4⭐️ hotel
    • $180-470 average price range
    • in the closest, nicest, and safest neighborhood to the historic center
    • 24 hour security service, kitchenettes, a new and clean feel, and a great rooftop area
  • Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City (nearby)
    • 5⭐️ hotel
    • $560-1,000+ average price range
    • one of the most luxurious hotels in Mexico City and definitely a safe choice for any visit
    • service is spectacular, the rooms are impeccable, and the location is convenient

Coyoacán

Coyoacan is one of my favorite areas in Mexico City, and its typically pretty safe and festive.

Coyoacán is my favorite quieter, more family-friendly neighborhood in Mexico City that has some great safe boutique-style hotels. This area is where you’ll find the Frida Kahlo museum, and it’s often very festive during holiday seasons.

Best Safe Hotels In Coyoacán:

  • Ágata Hotel Boutique & Spa
    • 5⭐️ hotel
    • $200-240 average price range
    • one of the best, safe areas in Mexico City for its comfy rooms, spa-like bathrooms, an adorable rooftop terrace, free airport shuttle service, free breakfast (even allergy friendly options), and extras like tea, coffee, and chocolate
  • Casa Moctezuma
    • 4⭐️ hotel
    • $140 average price range
    • more on the eco-friendly side with toiletries in glass bottles, no TV’s, and free filtered water to fill up bottles, plus the rooms have private kitchens, but they also include a great breakfast

San Ángel

San Angel isn't the most convenient, but there are still some good hotels here.

The San Angel area is a little further from typical Mexico City tourist areas, but it’s close to the university and has a more family-friendly neighborhood feel with safe hotels.

A Few Other Safe Hotels In Mexico City

While Mexico City has its more dangerous areas, there are plenty of safe areas in the city and great hotels to choose from.

While the areas listed above (Polanco, Coyoacan, and La Condesa/Roma) are typically the best for tourists in Mexico City, there are a few places that have some safe hotels outside of those areas.

Centro

While the city center is convenient to be close to many of the best things to do in Mexico City, it’s not always the safest area (especially at night), but these two hotels are good options here:

  • Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico
    • 4⭐️ hotel
    • $195-350 average price range
    • a historic building with beautiful architecture, great views of Zócalo square, and hotel 24 hour staff
  • Zócalo Central Hotel
    • 4⭐️ hotel
    • $160-300 average price range
    • historic hotel with spectacular views of the cathedral, and a hotel staff and increased police patrol that help make it feel extra safe, even at night

Santa Fe

Santa Fe isn’t located super conveniently in the Mexico City area for tourists, but it’s got one of the best (and safest) luxury hotels in the city so I thought I’d add it anyways:

The Airport

The area around the airport in Mexico City isn’t the nicest or safest, but there’s a hotel attached to the airport (I’ve stayed here multiple times) that’s super safe and convenient since you don’t have to go outside to get to your hotel (you just walk through the airport):

⛑️ Other Ways To Stay Safe In Mexico City

Most tourist areas in Mexico City are fairly safe, but it's always important to be cautious and aware here.

Here are a few other ways you can make your stay in Mexico City even safer:

  • don’t openly and obviously use/wear expensive technology/jewelry, etc.
  • limit late nights out when possible, and pay for an Uber ride rather than walking around late at night
  • remember to bring pants and jackets because CDMX is fairly chilly and you likely won’t need shorts or flip flops (nobody wears those here anyways)
  • always be aware of your surroundings (anywhere in the world, any time of day)
  • don’t drink the water, don’t drink anything with ice, and don’t eat anything washed in water (lettuce for example); I won’t even brush my teeth with sink water here

🔁 Sum Up: Safe Areas In Mexico City

Mexico City gets a pretty bad rap when it comes to safety, but as a female that’s visited this capital city on numerous occasions, I’ve found that it’s best to be cautious but it’s not as bad as they say and there are plenty of safe areas to stay (Polanco, Coyoacan, Condesa, etc.) and lots of great hotels to choose from here.
