Chichen Itza vs Teotihuacan: Which Is Better To Visit In Mexico?
Planning A Trip To Mexico And Looking For More Info On Chichen Itza vs Teotihuacan To Decide Which Is The Better Historical Site To Visit?
History has always been my favorite subject (it was the only thing I was interested in studying in college), and traveling has made it even more exciting, getting to visit historical sites and bringing the past to life. Some of my favorites have been in Mexico, at sites like Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, but here’s a comparison between the two so you can decide if one vs the other, both, or neither is worth adding to your next trip.
🛕 Chichen Itza vs Teotihuacan

⭐️ Overall:
- ➡️ Chichen Itza is a bit more expensive and a little harder to reach in comparison, but it is huge, more complete, and one of the coolest historical sites you can visit in the world, so I think it is definitely worth adding to any Yucatan trip
- ➡️ Teotihuacan is a bit more mysterious, it has more pyramids, it’s a little easier to reach, it’s a bit more interactive, and the weather here is a lot nicer, so it is a must-see in Mexico in my opinion, especially when visiting Mexico City

Which Did I Like Better?
I’ve visited the Yucatan Peninsula and the Central Mexico area a couple of times and seen both Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, and although there are a few downsides to each (like the touristy-ness), I did enjoy seeing both historical sites.
If I had to pick a favorite, I would probably say I enjoyed Teotihuacan a little bit more because the site was no where near as crazy and busy, I was able to actually climb up the pyramid, and the weather was much more pleasant here, but Chichen Itza is a Wonder of the World, so you really can’t go wrong with either.
🐍 Why Visit Chichen Itza

No matter what part of the Yucatan Peninsula you plan to visit, if it’s your first time here, you should definitely consider adding Chichen Itza to your itinerary for a couple of reasons:
- ✅ Chichen Itza is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, so it’s literally one of the most interesting historical sites you can see, and definitely worth adding to your bucket list
- ✅ compared to many other ruins in this area, Chichen Itza is one of the most complete Mayan ruin sites you can visit
- ✅ it’s not located super close to vacation towns like Cancun or Tulum (it’s at least two hours away depending on where you start), but it’s so popular that there are plenty of ways to get here (from either Cancun or Tulum) so it’s still fairly easy to reach
- ✅ also since it’s such a popular place, there are so many tours you can choose from if you want the most stress-free way to get here and these are a couple of the highest rated options (plus here’s a review of a tour I went on):
- 🛕 Chichen Itza from Cancun with a cenote, Valladolid city, and Mayan cuisine
- 🛕 Chichen Itza from Merida with Izamal, the Ik Kil cenote, and food
- 🛕 VIP Private Chichen Itza tour (a really nice way to visit this historical site)
- 🛕 Small Group Chichen Itza tour with Ek Balam and a cenote
- ✅ if you really love history, there are even more historical sites you can visit in this area like the Coba Ruins, the Ek Balam site, and the Tulum Ruins (which is pretty easy to visit in just a day even if you’re staying in Cancun)
The Downsides Of Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a really great historical site to visit, but a couple of things that might make you want to check out Teotihuacan vs this site, include:
- ❌ how busy it always is; that’s one reason why visiting early in the morning is a little better
- ❌ how incredibly hot and humid it is here (the other reason why visiting early can help a little)
- ❌ how incredibly touristy it is with lots of slimy vendors constantly trying to sell you something that they way overcharge for (if you speak Spanish you’ll get a much more discounted price compared to what they offer English speakers)
- ❌ how much time it takes to visit; even tours where you don’t have to do the driving yourself can be pretty exhausting because they’re usually a full day of around 10-13 hours
▵ Why Visit Teotihuacan

So far, Teotihuacan has been one of my favorite historical/archaeological sites that I’ve visited in Mexico for a couple of reasons:
- ✅ Teotihuacan is a bit more mysterious in terms of its origins, since the original builders are still not known
- ✅ Teotihuacan has more pyramids to see vs Chichen Itza with the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent
- ✅ although this can change due to the condition of the site, Teotihuacan is a bit more interactive in the fact that you can climb all or parts of the pyramid
- pictured above is me standing on top of the Pyramid of the Sun with the Pyramid of the Moon in the background
- ✅ in comparison vs the Chichen Itza site, Teotihuacan is also a bit cheaper to visit
- currently entrance fees to Chichen Itza cost about 300% more than Teotihuacan
- ✅ compared to Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan is a little bit easier to reach since it’s only about 1-1.5 hours from the major city
- ✅ similar to Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan is such a popular place to visit from the nearby area of Mexico City, so there are plenty of guided tour options to choose from; here are a few of the highest rated options:
- 🛕 Morning or Afternoon Teotihuacan Tour with a promise not to have any tourist traps
- 🛕 Teotihuacan 3 Pyramids Tour with lunch at La Gruta (a restaurant inside a natural cave)
- 🛕 Private Teotihuacan Tour from Mexico City (also a really nice way to experience this historical site)
- 🛕 Teotihuacan Hot Air Balloon Tour also with an actual visit to the pyramids and lunch in the cave restaurant
The Downsides Of Teotihuacan

I loved visiting Teotihuacan and in comparison, I preferred it vs the Chichen Itza site, but here a few reasons why you might not:
- ❌ it is a fascinating historical site, but it’s not one of the New Seven Wonders of the World like Chichen Itza
- ❌ there was a somewhat more recent safety concern here at Teotihuacan, but that can happen anywhere unfortunately
- ❌ similar to Chichen Itza, and most sites around Mexico, Teotihuacan is a bit touristy (especially when tours make the commercial/salesy stops) which unfortunately takes a little away from an otherwise cool historical experience
- ❌ if you were planning on a Mexico beach trip, Teotihuacan is located in the center of the country (closest to Mexico City), so it doesn’t fit in quite as well as Chichen Itza does for that kind of vacation
✌️ Chichen Itza vs Teotihuacan: Should You Visit Both?

If you have enough time, a big interest in history, and the budget for it, I’d say definitely check out both Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan because they are different enough to enjoy seeing both sites.
But if you don’t have enough time or interest, I would say choose Teotihuacan vs Chichen Itza for a city trip to Mexico with mysterious and climbable historical sites, or choose Chichen Itza over Teotihuacan for a Mexico beach trip with fascinating Mayan ruins and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

🔁 Sum Up: Chichen Itza vs Teotihuacan
As a history lover, I found both of the archaeological sites of Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan to be fascinating places to visit (my personal favorite being Teotihuacan), but if you don’t have time or interest in seeing both, I’d say visit Teotihuacan vs Chichen Itza for a more city centered Mexico trip with more mysterious origins, more pyramids, and climbable options, or visit Chichen Itza over Teotihuacan for a beach trip with lots of Mayan ruins, one of the most complete ruin sites, and one of the New Seven Wonders of the Word.
