Adding A Day Trip To Your Itinerary To The Famous Teotihuacan Pyramids, But Wondering What’s The Best Way To Get Here From Mexico City?

Visiting the Teotihuacan Pyramids was one of my top interests the very first time I visited Mexico City, and although I had a great time and loved getting to climb to the top of one of the pyramids, the way I visited was very touristy which took a little away from the cool historical experience, so there are definitely some better options for getting here and exploring this archaeological site from the capital city.

🛕 Getting To The Pyramids From Mexico City

It's not too difficult to get here since it's such a popular site.

⭐️ Overall – Getting To The Teotihuacan Pyramids From Mexico City:

  • 🚌 it’s definitely doable to get to Teotihuacan from CDMX on your own, but taxis and Ubers will be fairly expensive, potentially not super nice, and not as available for the longer distance, while busses are pretty cheap and can be ok/safe, but won’t be super quick
  • 🛕 they used to be really really touristy but now most guided tours to the Teotihuacan Pyramids from Mexico City seem to be focusing more on the authentic historical experience (which is why they advertise “without tourist traps”), so this is definitely the easiest, most convenient, and most stress-free way to get here

🚘 Every Way To Get To The Teotihuacan Pyramids From Mexico City

Here are all the ways you can get to the Teotihuacan pyramids from Mexico City.

Although it’s usually described as being a part of Mexico City, the Teotihuacan Pyramids are actually pretty far from most of the touristy parts of the city and it can take over an hour to reach depending on where you’re coming from exactly and at what time you’re traveling (there is a lot of traffic here).

While I definitely think there is an easier, less stressful way to get to Teotihuacan from Mexico City, here are all the possible options to get yourself here:

Uber

If you want to get to Teotihuacan without a guided tour, the safest, nicest, and cheapest option (compared to taxis) is going to be with Uber, but you might have a hard time finding a willing driver.

I have used Uber to go all over this city and not had any problems myself, but I have read about some safety issues, so even though it is generally one of the safer options, you should still remain cautious and aware.

Taxi

Taxis are not usually the safest options in Mexico City, there are tons of fake taxis, they overcharge, drivers can be sketchy, cars aren’t super nice, and communication can be more difficult, so it’s best to avoid them whenever possible.

Plus Teotihuacan is pretty far away, so you might find a ride to the Pyramids, but you’ll likely have a harder time getting a ride back.

➡️ How Much Is A Taxi From Mexico City To Teotihuacan? a one way ride in a taxi to Teotihuacan from Mexico City would typically cost around $40-50 US

Here are a few reasons why the Teotihuacan Pyramids are definitely worth visiting.

Day Trip Tour To The Teotihuacan Pyramids From Mexico City

If you want a safe, convenient, and stress-free way to get to the Teotihuacan Pyramids from Mexico City, your best option is going to be on a guided tour. There are lots of options, but these are a few of the highest rated:

  • 🛕 YouTours CDMX (5.0 stars with 2,100+ reviews) private tour to Teotihuacan
  • 🛕 Yolotli Adventures (5.0 stars with 800+ reviews) hotel pickup, 3 pyramids tour, and lunch at La Gruta
  • 🛕 Paseos Olmedo (4.9 stars with 10,300+ reviews) morning or afternoon tour without tourist traps

Public Transportation

A lot of people that don’t want to take a tour to Teotihuacan choose to take the bus from Mexico City, and say it’s a very simple, easy, and cheap process.

Although I don’t normally recommend public transportation here (because it’s not very safe, it’s usually very crowded, and it takes a lot longer), I have taken the bus to some nearby cities (like Puebla and Cholula) and it’s turned out great, so riding the bus from Teotihuacan to Mexico City could be a good option if you want to explore on your own time and are looking for the most budget-friendly option.

Driving Yourself

If you’re already planning to rent a car for your trip to Mexico City, then driving yourself to Teotihuacan would be best to explore on your own time, but I would not really recommend driving yourself in Mexico City because it’s one of the craziest driving places I’ve ever seen, plus there are other expenses like tolls, parking, and gas.

You can get to the pyramids from Mexico City pretty easily.

Private Transportation To The Pyramids From Mexico City

While private transportation is usually a great idea for getting to/from the airport in Mexico City, it is also a great and really safe option for getting to the Teotihuacan Pyramids.

It might be a little more expensive, but the convenience and safety of it make it a really nice option.

A Unique View Of The Pyramids

Aside from the typical tourist activity of walking around the grounds at the archeological site, another really popular and unique experience you can have here is to see the site from above in a hot air balloon.

Even in the US, but especially in Mexico, I would recommend being very careful about what company you go with, and making sure they have a lot of highly rated reviews like these ones:

  • 🎈 Tlatoani Tours (4.9 stars with 7,700+ reviews) pickup in CDMX, balloon flight, pyramids, and breakfast in a cave
  • 🎈 Teotihuacan Adventures (4.9 stars with 2,600+ reviews) full day, pickup in CDMX, balloon flight, pyramids, and breakfast in a cave
  • 🎈 Cielo Azteca (4.9 stars with 1,100+ reviews) small group tour, pickup in CDMX, balloon flight, pyramids, and breakfast in a cave
  • 🎈 Aventuras Teotihuacan (5.0 stars with 100+ reviews) pickup in CDMX, balloon flight, pyramids, and breakfast in a cave
Teotihuacan might not seem worth visiting for some.

🔁 Sum Up: Getting To The Teotihuacan Pyramids From Mexico City

Since the Pyramids of Teotihuacan are one of the most important and popular historical sites to visit near the Mexico City area, it’s actually a pretty simple place to get to from this capital city. I’d recommend a highly rated guided tour or even a hot air balloon tour for the most convenient and stress-free option, but you can also get here fairly easily using public transportation (although it’s not super nice and takes a lot longer).
