Heading To Cabo San Lucas, Mexico And Wondering If The Kayaking Is Any Good Here?

On my very first trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico one of the first activities I did the day after I got there was going on a kayaking tour at sunrise, and although it was a little tough, I loved it and had a very special wildlife viewing experience while out there, so I definitely recommend it here.

🚣‍♀️ Is The Kayaking Good In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico?

Going out at sunrise was pretty cool, especially because I saw a Mobula Ray fly up out of the water.

You can definitely kayak in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and it can be good and beautiful here, but kayaking isn’t always that easy in these waters.

Even snorkeling and swimming in the ocean here isn’t always recommended because the waters can be really rough, the rip tides can be strong, and the waves often violently crash right on the shore.

I’ve watched lifeguards struggle to do practice saves, I’ve been beaten up and sucked back out by the crashing waves, I watched my mom get stuck underwater from a powerful wave, and I’ve felt the difficulty in paddling out on this water while surfing here in Cabo.

➡️ So kayaking is definitely doable here in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and it can be a fun thing to add to your itinerary, but you should be extra cautious, extra prepared, extra strong (paddling can be tough), and have a very healthy respect of the ocean.

📍 Where Can You Kayak In Cabo?

Since the water isn't always safe here, there are better sports for kayaking in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Technically anyone can go out in their own kayak in Cabo (although there are some rules now because of the number of boats in the area), but there are certain places that have kayak rentals or even a number of resorts/beach clubs that have free kayaks for their guests/members.

some resorts (like one of my favorites, The Montage), might have kayaks for their guests to use for free, plus a free sunrise kayak tour (more info on this later)

other than that, most kayaking opportunities in Cabo are going to be on a tour (see the next section for more on this), which isn’t all that bad since the waters can be more dangerous here

There are a few tours you can find here to get out on the water and paddle.

Instead of getting a kayak rental from one of the beaches in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and going out on your own, a safer way to get out on the water here is on a group kayaking tour with a guide. Some highly rated options include:

Unique Kayaking Experience For Montage Guests

The sunrise kayaking experience at the Montage in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico was pretty incredible.

If you choose to stay at The Montage in Cabo, a unique experience that this resort offers to its guests for free is the sunrise kayak tour.

I went on this the day after I arrived in Cabo, so I was very tired, but the waters were fairly calm at this time of day (although still a workout paddling in this water), and I had a very exciting wildlife viewing experience while out there.

On this first visit to Cabo I was visiting in June so I knew Mobula Rays were one of the possible wildlife/marine life species I could see at this time (since all the whales had gone by then), but I wasn’t sure of the likelihood.

Just as we were heading back in and I was a little bummed that I hadn’t seen anything, a Mobula Ray jumped up out of the water, perfectly in line with the rising sun so I had an amazing silhouette view of it!

I haven’t seen/heard of any other sunrise kayak options at least for paid tours, so this is a cool benefit of staying at The Montage.

Although the kayaking can be tough in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I thought it was worth it because of the wildlife experience I had, the beautiful views out there, the good workout it gives you, and the fun/unique Cabo experience it can be. I definitely suggest having a healthy respect of the ocean and going on a tour to be with others, but I think Cabo can be a great place to go kayaking.
