Which Is Better To Visit Destin Or Pensacola Florida?
Planning A Trip The The Florida Panhandle And Wondering Which Is Better To Visit, Destin Or Pensacola?
I’ve spent a good amount of time in both Destin and Pensacola, and although I personally prefer one over the other, both have beautiful beaches and their own pros and cons so hopefully this guide will help you decide which one is best for your next trip to Florida.
🏖 Which Is Better To Visit Destin Or Pensacola, Florida?

Both Destin and Pensacola are popular beach destinations, but they’re a little different even though they’re under 50 miles apart, so you might find that one sounds better than the other for your Florida trip.
Why Visit Destin, Florida

✅ Destin is a very popular beach destination and lots of people come from all over (especially from Texas) to spend their summers here because:
- the ocean water is usually beautifully blue/emerald in color and very clear
- the beach has a soft, sugary white powder sand (which helps make the water clear and beautiful)
- it’s a family-friendly place to vacation
- the waves are usually calmer and more kid-friendly here
- fishing off the coast is typically really good here
- it’s more of a higher end/luxury destination (at least for the Florida Panhandle)
- there are lots of fun adventurous water activities

❌ Although Destin is a very popular vacation spot and people choose to come back here year after year, these are a few of the downsides to this beachside town:
- outside of going to the beach, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of other things to do in Destin
- Destin is an expensive place to visit, especially during high season
- it gets very crowded here; although depending on the time of year, most Florida beaches do
- the sand is blinding and burning here; the sugary white sand is beautiful but when the sun hits it, it’s blinding (at least to me and my sensory issues), plus even in the shade you can get sunburnt
- because of the crowds, the traffic in Destin can be terrible; just trying to drive down the street to a store or restaurant can take forever
- you can’t see the nearby Blue Angels shows from Destin
Why Visit Pensacola, Florida

✅ Pensacola is just over an hour away from Destin (depending on the traffic) and the two have a lot of similarities, but I personally prefer Pensacola because:
- the beaches in Pensacola (the sand and the water) are just as beautiful and clear as they are in Destin
- it’s usually less expensive in Pensacola compared to Destin
- also compared to Destin, even during the high season it feels less crowded and congested here
- Pensacola is the home of the Blue Angels and you can see the free summer practice air shows here
- the Naval Aviation Museum is also here in Pensacola and it’s a really cool museum that’s definitely worth checking out
- Pensacola also has plenty of great water activities to choose from
- Pensacola has a cute little historic downtown area

❌ Although I do like Pensacola, some downsides to this beach and naval aviation town include:
- the fact that it’s less of a luxury kind of place compared to Destin and more of a cheaper family destination
- it’s lack of healthier food options (they don’t even have a Sprouts or Whole Foods)
- the sand will also blind and burn you here like it does in Destin
- it’s a bigger city compared to Destin so it does have a few less safe pockets
So, Which Is Better, Destin or Pensacola?

My personal preference between Destin and Pensacola is Pensacola because both beaches are beautiful, but Pensacola has the Blue Angels, the Naval Aviation Museum, and it’s usually a little cheaper/less crowded.
Destin is still a beautiful place to visit though and it might be better for a safer, nicer, and fancier family vacation.
🚗 How To Get From Destin To Pensacola

If you can’t choose between the two and would like to spend time in both Destin and Pensacola, I think it’d be best to stay in Destin and then just take a day trip over to Pensacola to see the Blue Angels, visit the Naval Aviation Museum, check out their beaches, or explore the historic Fort Pickens.
It’s easy to drive to Pensacola from Destin but with the congestion in the Destin area, it can take over an hour to go the 50-ish miles. You could also Uber from one to the other, but that’d be quite expensive ($100+ each way) so it’s probably best to rent a car if you really want to visit both.
🔁 Sum Up: Destin Or Pensacola?
Although they’re located pretty close to each other, Destin and Pensacola both have beautiful beaches, but they each have their own pros and cons for visiting so whether or not one is better than the other just depends on the kind of Florida vacation you want. I personally prefer Pensacola over Destin because I love watching the Blue Angels and visiting the Naval Aviation Museum, but Destin is a safe, nice, and more luxurious beach destination so I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
