Old Town is the best place to stay in Key West, Florida for convenience, you definitely don’t need a car here (although I don’t think you really need a car anywhere in Key West), but it is more expensive and busy here, especially in the high season.
Despite the cost and the crowds, I think it’s worth staying in this area so you can walk everywhere, be close to all the best things to do and the tour departure spots (like snorkeling at the coral reef), and have plenty of nice hotels to choose from.

How many days you need in Key West does depend on what you plan to do in Key West. If you’re planing on just exploring the Old Town area, checking out a few museums, and going on a few tours (which I think is all still worth it), I think three days, not including travel, is plenty of time.
If you plan to visit Key West during some popular events or checking out somewhere further away like Dry Tortugas National Park, then a few extra days would definitely be necessary.
