4 Day Key West Itinerary (For The Adventurous/Outdoor Lovers)
Planning Out The Details For Your Trip To Key West And Looking For More Ideas Or A Full Itinerary For Your Vacation?
I visited Key West when I was living in South Florida so it was an easy road trip for me to make, and although I don’t think you need a super long vacation here, I do think Key West is worth a short trip to have some fun adventurous and outdoor/water experiences.
π Key West 4 Day Itinerary

There isn’t an endless amount of things to see and do in Key West in my opinion, but I still enjoyed my time here (especially at the coral reef), so I definitely think Key West is still worth visiting at least once on a short trip of three to four days.
Day 1: Snorkeling At The Coral Reef

The number one thing to do in Key West in my opinion is to visit the Coral Reef because it is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental US and it provides some pretty great snorkeling opportunities.
I recommend planning a snorkeling trip out to the reef on one of the first few days you visit because if conditions are bad (like too much wind) the snorkel tours won’t go to the reef, so this way you have more days to reschedule if you need to so you can do your best to get to the reef.
Other than spending half your day at the coral reef, you can easily check out some popular Key West restaurants for dinner or even go back out on the water again for a sunset sail.
Day 2: Dry Tortugas National Park
One place that I didn’t get to check out during my visit to Key West that I really wanted to was the civil war era fort about 70 miles off the coast of Key West. The old fort is now a national park, Dry Tortugas National Park, and it’s a great place to see some history or go scuba diving or snorkeling.
There are some private luxury boat charters that you can take to get out to the Dry Tortugas area, or the Yankee Freedom Ferry.
Day 3: Key West History

To get a little break from the sun and water, you can spend the entire day checking out some of Key Wests’ cultural and historical sites.
In the 1930s, famous American writer Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West and his former home is now a museum (pictured above). You can see his former home on your own, or do aΒ 4-hour Hemingway Experience tour.
Some other historical/cultural sites that you can spend the day seeing in Key West include:
- Fort Zachary Taylor
- Truman Little White House
- USCGC Ingham Maritime Museum
- Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
- Key West Shipwreck Museum
- the Southernmost Point in the continental US
Day 4: Beaches & Water Activities
For the final day in Key West, you can spend a little more time out in the water or on the beach. The beaches in Key West aren’t anything too special to me, but if you head over to Fort Zachary Taylor, you can see some history, spend time at the beach, or even snorkel off the shore here.
If you like the adventurous water type activities, Key West has plenty of fun options to choose from like:
- Jet Skiing
- Going out to a Sandbar
- Doing a Sunset Sail
- Kayaking through the Mangroves
- Having a Shark/Wildlife Adventure
- Doing a Night Kayak
- andΒ much more
π Where To Stay In Key West

The most convenient area to stay in Key West is the Old Town area because everything is close and walkable here.
There are also cheaper hotel options further away from the Old Town area so you won’t be able to walk to it, but many of these hotels have free shuttles so they can be good options if you want to save a little on accommodations.
π How To Get Around Key West

I don’t think that a rental car is necessary in Key West and I don’t think you’ll even need Ubers or taxis for anything other than getting to/from the airport, because the Old Town area of Key West is very walkable.
But if you want a few other non-walking options for Key West, here are a few popular ones:
- golf cart rentals
- the hop on hop off trolley
- the conch tour train
- bike rentals
- hotel shuttles
- guided tours
π When To Visit Key West

The cheapest time to visit Key West is in summer and fall, although there’s a catch, while the best time to visit for weather is in winter and spring, although it’s more expensive and crowded during these months.
π Sum Up: Key West Itinerary
I don’t think that there is an endless amount of things to see and do in Key West, Florida, but I do think it’s still worth at least a short visit of three to four days, so hopefully with this itinerary designed more for the adventurous/outdoorsy type, you’ll find plenty of things to add to your Key West trip.
