Is Cancun Worth It (Or Is It Mexico’s Most Overrated Destination)?
Planning A Trip To Mexico And Wondering If The Riviera Maya City Of Cancun Is Worth Visiting Or If It Is An Overrated Destination Here?
Mexico is the destination I’ve traveled to most, including the Riviera Maya and Cancun areas, and although I have my personal preferences on which places I think are the best to visit, here are all the pros and cons so you can decide if Cancun is worth adding to your next Mexico trip.
๐ฒ๐ฝ Is It Worth Visiting Cancun, Mexico?

Cancun is a very popular destination to visit in Mexico, but it’s not always been my favorite place to travel to, aside from a few specific things, so I wouldn’t normally recommend it as the best place to visit in the country.
But a lot of people really love traveling here, so you may find visiting this section of the Yucatan Peninsula to be totally worth it depending on your interests and what kind of a vacation you’re looking to have.
Why I Think It’s An Overrated Destination

I’ve been on the east coast, the west coast, to central, and to northern Mexico, but out of all the places I’ve visited, Cancun specifically is at the bottom of the list for me and I don’t think it’s always worth visiting because:
- it’s way too touristy and it feels like someone is constantly trying to sell you something or rip you off
- it’s not always the safest place to visit, and not even taxis or Ubers are always very safe here
- it is very hot and humid, especially when you go deep into the jungle to visit sites like Chichen Itza or Ek Balam, but the cool waters of the cenotes are very nice
- it’s a huge party destination so if you’re like me and you don’t like that, it can feel pretty ugh

- the airport is a nightmare in Cancun (at least it has been for me) so that can really start your trip off on a bad note
- renting a car is popular in Cancun, but driving is not great here for many reasons
- compared to somewhere like Cabo, Cancun is not as nicely developed everywhere in terms of roads, structures, etc.
- if you like surfing, Cancun isn’t the best surf destination (like Cabo), but they can get some small rideable waves
- unlike some places on the pacific side of Mexico (like Baja California), the wildlife/marine life in Cancun isn’t as interesting but they do still have the unique crocodiles (pictured further down)
Why So Many Do Think Cancun Is Worth It

Although Cancun is not my favorite place in the country (or the world), I do sometimes think (and others think too) that the Riviera Maya area can be worth visiting because:
- it has a wonder of the world and other very interesting ancient historical sites and ruins
- compared to some beach destinations like Cabo, Cancun is more reasonably priced depending on the time of year you visit and what kind of hotel you choose
- although it is pretty hot here, it does make for great beach weather and water activities
- and while I don’t like this about Cancun, many specifically visit this part of Mexico because of the lively/party atmosphere
๐ How Many Days Do You Need In Cancun?

It depends on what you want to do to determine how long you need in Cancun, Mexico.
I think a couple of days to see the beach, see the ruins (especially Chichen Itza), and see some cenotes is all the time you need, but if you want to have a weeklong beach vacation, travel all over the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula, or visit during the party time of the year, then you’d definitely need a week or more to visit Cancun.
๐จ Where’s The Best Place To Stay In Cancun? the best place to stay in Cancun is in the hotel zone along the beach to have the nicest, most relaxing kind of Caribbean vacation
๐ Sum Up: Is It Worth Visiting Cancun, Mexico?
Cancun has not been my favorite place to visit in Mexico (or in the world in general) and I would probably say that it is one of the most overrated destinations in the country, but because you can see ancient ruins, a wonder of the world, beautiful beaches, and unique fresh water cenotes, the Riviera Maya area can be worth visiting for those that prefer the natural and adventurous kinds of trips.
