Traveling To Cartagena, Colombia And Wondering What The Best Way To Get Around Here Is?
When I was living in Colombia I got to travel to locations all over the country, including to the city of Cartagena, and as a solo female traveler, I was always looking for the best, cheapest, and safest ways to get around each place.
🇨🇴 How To Get Around Cartagena, Colombia
Depending on where you’re staying in Cartagena, this city is a very walkable city so you may not need transportation to get to all the places you want to visit.
I stayed out away from the main historic city center (kind of in the hood) and even I was able to walk to the historic center, although it was a pretty long walk so I would recommend staying in the more touristy areas for convenience and safety.
Other than sites in the historic walled city of Cartagena, you will need some other transportation options to get around to those longer distance locations.

Are Ubers In Cartagena Safe
In Cartagena and Colombia in general, Ubers are usually the best and safest ways to get around, but you should always still be cautious even with ride-shares.
Should You Get A Private Driver Or Uber In Cartagena
Especially from the airports in Colombia, getting a private driver over a taxi or even an Uber is a great idea since you’ll have all your belongings with you, and this way you can have someone waiting specifically for you (to avoid the bombardment of taxi drivers once you get out of the airport).
➡️ No matter when you visit, it’s almost always crowded in Cartagena which is one reason why it’s one of the more expensive places to visit in Colombia
Are Taxis Safe In Cartagena
Taxis are usually not the safest, cheapest, or best transportation options in Colombia in general and even more so in Cartagena, because there are so many tourists here so drivers really like to rip them off.
Day Tours From Cartagena Colombia
To see more of the area around Cartagena, Colombia, like Playa Blanca, the mud volcano, or the Rosario islands, the easiest, most convenient, and probably the cheapest way to get around is to go on some guided tours.
➡️ Although it’s typically more convenient in most places, I do not recommend driving in Colombia for a few reasons, but if you really really want to, you can rent a car here and drive yourself to all the best areas on this northern coast
🚌 How To Get From Cartagena To Other Places In Colombia
Whether you want to visit on a day trip or to continue on to your next Colombian destination, it’s really easy to use the public transportation system in Colombia.
I went all over the country on my own using the bus system and it was safe, cheap, and fun to see more of the country this way.
Cartagena Colombia To Santa Marta
Cartagena is under 5 hours from Santa Marta, so it can be really easy to get to using the bus system (just go to the transportation terminal and get a ticket for Santa Marta) or you can go the convenient route and get a private transfer from Cartagena to Santa Marta.
➡️ Santa Marta is home to the location of Simon Bolivar’s death, which makes it a great place to visit for history lovers
Cartagena Colombia To Barranquilla
Barranquilla is even closer to Cartagena (they’re only about 2.5 hours apart), and you can do the same thing as you did for Santa Marta (just go to the transportation terminal and get a ticket for Barranquilla), but I personally don’t feel like Barranquilla is worth too much time.
🔁 Sum Up: How To Get Around Cartagena, Colombia
Cartagena is one of the easier cities to get around in Colombia since the main historic area is very walkable and since this city gets so many tourists there are plenty of tours to take you out away from Cartagena to discover other places on this northern coast. There are also Ubers in Cartagena (which are usually safer than taxis) and plenty of good private transfer options to help make getting around extra easy and safe.
