When I was living in Colombia and teaching English, the teachers went on strike so school days were cut short and I had time to travel all over the country, but because I was on a Colombian salary, when I went to Cartagena, I didn’t stay in the old walled city where all the nicer hotels are and I definitely regretted it because where I stayed was not very nice or safe.

🏠 Is It Better To Stay At An Airbnb Or Hotel In Cartagena, Colombia?
There are lots of airbnbs all over Colombia but I typically do not recommend staying in airbnbs here because I have experienced myself and heard about all different kinds of problems with them in Colombia.
Whenever I traveled around Colombia, I always used Booking to find hotels because it was the easiest way to see all the options, the reviews, and book online in advance, so I would recommend this for the old walled city of Cartagena too.
📍 What’s The Best Area To Stay In Cartagena, Colombia?
Because I was on a Colombian salary, I tried to find the cheapest place to stay in Cartagena (because no matter what time of year you go, it’s always pretty expensive, for Colombia at least), so I ended up staying out away from the main historic city center and I do not recommend doing the same.
The old walled city is the best part of town to stay in Cartagena, Colombia because it’s easy to get around, it’s safer, more convenient, and has nicer hotels to choose from.

When I visited Cartagena, Colombia I didn’t choose to stay in the best part of town (the old walled city) because I was looking for the cheapest options, but I regret not choosing the historic city center because even though it’s more expensive, it’s got the nicest hotels, the safest environment, and the most convenient part of town for a vacation to this coastal Caribbean city.
