Planning A Trip To Colombia And Wondering What Is The Coffee Region And Is It Worth Adding To Your Itinerary?

When I signed up to teach English in Colombia, I had to put a preference location on where I wanted to live, and although I did not end up being placed in my preferred location, I was placed in the Coffee Region of the country and it turned out to be my absolute favorite area!

☕️ What Is The Coffee Region Of Colombia?

There are coffee farms all over this area and there's even an organic farm nearby.

The Coffee Region is a large area in Colombia that’s best known for its cultivation and production of coffee as well as its incredibly beautiful natural areas.

The Coffee Region is generally considered a very safe area in Colombia, and while I lived here, I spent so much time exploring it on my own and never felt like I was in danger, especially in the small towns.

📍 Where Exactly Is The Coffee Region?

The Coffee Region is a large section of the country, south of Medellin and west of Bogota. It includes medium-sized cities like Pereira, Armenia, and Manizales, as well as smaller popular towns like Salento, Filandia, and Santa Rosa de Cabal.

Almost all flights into Pereira and Armenia (Pereira is usually the best place to base yourself to explore the Coffee Region) will first go through Bogota, so it can take a little extra time and effort to reach, but I think it’s worth it.

The Coffee Region of Colombia is a beautiful part of the country.

Out of all the places I visited in Colombia (more than 20 locations), I think the Coffee Region is the most beautiful and the most worth visiting if you love nature, hiking, and non-city kinds of destinations.

Whenever anyone asks me where they should visit in Colombia, I always say the Coffee Region as my number one recommendation, so I definitely think it’s the best place to visit in the country.

🌴 Where Are The Best Places To Visit In The Coffee Region?

The nature surrounding this area is some of the most beautiful that I've ever seen.

If you have enough time to really explore the Coffee Region, outside of the typical Coffee Farm tours, here are some of my top recommendations on places to visit within this region or somewhat nearby:

  • Pereira – the capital of the Coffee Region; not necessarily amazing itself, but a great place to base yourself to explore the region
  • Filandia – another typical small town, not quite as crowded and touristy as Salento
  • Parque del Cafe – a coffee theme park with rides, shows, and coffee/history learning
  • Manizales – small city with a cool church and a big spiral orange staircase
