First Mondays are a historic and huge event here.

Because the First Monday flea market in Canton, Texas is so large and it can be a little intimidating, here are all the helpful things to know before visiting this huge and famous monthly swap meet:

What Is The Canton, Texas First Monday Flea Market?

The Canton, Texas First Monday Flea Market is a huge swap meet in east Texas.

Although Canton is a pretty small town in east Texas, it is probably one of the most visited small towns in the state because it has the biggest flea market in the world that has been around for more than 175 years.

The First Monday Trade Days (as its known) is what Canton, Texas is most known for and this swap meet spans over 450 acres, has more than 5,000 vendors, and gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each month.

When Is The Canton First Monday Flea Market?

Despite the name, it is not actually held on Mondays.

Despite the “First Monday” name, the flea market does not actually take place on a Monday, but rather the weekend (Thursday through Sunday) before the first Monday of each month.

Thursdays are typically one of the least crowded days at the market, but sometimes vendors are still setting up. The weekend is definitely the most popular time to visit and it can get really crowded out here, especially when the weather is nice.

Why Should You Visit?

You should visit the Canton, Texas flea market if you love garage sale type shopping.

Although it’s a little out of the way for most typical trips to Texas, visiting Canton and going to the First Monday flea market is definitely worth it for:

  • the cultural experience – you’ll really get to experience the real Texas out here; it’s almost like the state fair, minus the rides
  • the historical significance – it’s been around since 1850
  • the size – it is the largest flea market in the world spanning over 450 acres with 5,000+ vendors
  • the deals – this swap meet is like one extremely large garage sale that sometimes has more expensive things, but has sellers that are usually willing to make deals on everything from new items to old vintage stuff

How To Get There

It's easy to get to if you have a car.

If you have a car, or plan to rent one for your Texas trip, it’s really easy to get to Canton to go to the swap meet, especially from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Tyler is also pretty close to Canton, but all other all other locations will probably require a stay overnight.

If you don’t have a car, it’s probably not going to be worth visiting because an Uber could cost over $100 one way, and you might have trouble finding a ride back.

What To Do

Since the flea market in Canton, Texas is so large, it can be hard to decide where to start.

Because the swap meet is so large and it can be a bit intimidating trying to figure out where to go, here are a few recommendations:

  • while most vendors accept cash and card, parking is usually cash only and there are a few different places to park mostly to the west and the south of the market
  • if you don’t care what you see and just want to wander around the market, just know that you can go the whole day and not see half of what they have here because it is so large
  • if you prefer to see specific things when you go to the market, you can see a map with general vendor information here (like vintage items, antiques, etc.) but there really isn’t a way to know what specific vendors are out there
  • aside from the typical shopping options, something that not a lot of people know the market has is animals for sale; you can find puppies, bunnies, chickens, cows, and much more
  • the market has plenty of fried and greasy food available, but if you have allergies or eat healthy, plan ahead and bring food with you (I can never find anything that I can eat out here)
