Austin Texas vs Dallas Texas (Which Is Better To Visit)
Thinking About Visiting Texas, But Looking For More Info On Austin vs Dallas To Decide Which Area To Visit?
I’ve lived in both Austin, Texas and Dallas, Texas, and while neither was my favorite place to live, they can both be interesting places to visit depending on your interests, but below is a comparison between the two so you can choose one city vs the other or see if both are worth adding to your next Texas trip.
๐จ๐ฑ Austin, Texas vs Dallas, Texas

Although they’re both in the state of Texas, Dallas and Austin are very different places and each have their own pros and cons, so deciding whether to visit one vs the other comes down to personal preference and what kind of Texas trip you’re looking to have.
Dallas Pros & Cons

I didn’t really like living in Dallas even though so much of my fathers family comes from this part of Texas, but there were two parts of this city that I really enjoyed experiencing so I still think it’s entirely worth visiting.
โ Pros of Visiting Dallas, Texas (I have a full list of reasons why Dallas is worth visiting, but here’s a quick summary of the best reasons):
- US History – lots of JFK-related sites, some civil war history, and some famous television sites
- Prehistoric History – dinosaur footprints at the Dinosaur Valley State Park
- Cowboy Culture – cattle drives, rodeos, John Wayne, and country dancing nearby in the Fort Worth stockyards
- Sports – Dallas has all the professional sports: Cowboys Football, Mavericks Basketball, FC Dallas Soccer, Stars Hockey, Texas Rangers Baseball

โ Cons of Visiting Dallas, Texas:
- you typically need a car because Dallas is so spread out, but driving in Dallas is horrible
- Dallas isn’t super cheap, especially during events
- the weather can be really bad in Dallas; tornadoes in the spring and even fall, snow and ice in the winter, hot and humid in the summer
- not all of Dallas is very safe; it’s a huge city so there are pockets that you really don’t want to visit
Austin Pros & Cons

Although I was born in Austin and lived there again during and a little after my college years, it wasn’t my favorite since I went through some of my worst mental health problems here, but it can be a really nice place to visit if you like outdoor/water type activities.
โ Pros of Visiting Austin, Texas (I have a full list of reasons why Austin is worth visiting, but here’s a quick summary of the best reasons):
- Nature + Outdoors – a huge lake through the middle of the city, natural springs, river tubing, hiking, and more
- Wildlife – seasonal bat residents that fly out from under the main Congress Bridge in downtown every day during certain times of the year
- UT – I might be a little biased, but visiting the University of Texas campus or even better, going to a UT Football game is a huge draw for visiting Austin
- Events – outside of Football and now professional Soccer events, Austin is home to two very large and popular music events (but residents were never really big fans of them because they make the city so crowded)
- Food – comparing the food between Austin vs Dallas, Austin is known as the more foodie city in Texas with a lot of healthier food options too

โ Cons of Visiting Austin, Texas:
- although the outskirts of Austin are usually pretty safe, the downtown and University areas can be more dangerous, especially at night and especially for those out alone
- Austin is physically a pretty small city, but there are a lot of people in the city and even more during special events, so the traffic can be horrendous here
- compared to a lot of other places in the state, Austin is a pretty expensive place to visit, especially during events when hotel rooms can be incredibly hard to find
- the weather isn’t always the best in Austin either; the summers are quite hot, the winters can be icy and cold, and the spring and fall seasons can cause some terrible allergies
- the downtown Austin area is a huge party scene with the famous 6th street and while some enjoy that, it’s not my thing so I feel like it’s a downside to Austin
So, Which Is Better To Visit, Austin or Dallas, Texas?

Whether or not Austin or Dallas is the better city to visit in Texas comes down to personal preference and what you want to see and do during your visit (although they are located fairly close to each other so you don’t necessarily have to choose one vs the other).
๐ I think Dallas is better for a trip more centered on history, cowboy/western culture, and professional sports.
๐ I think Austin is the better place to visit for a more nature, music, college sports, and foodie type of a trip.
If I personally had to pick one over the other, I would probably choose Dallas because I love history (especially the JFK history here) and the cowboy culture in Fort Worth (especially rodeos and bull riding).
