Is Downtown Austin Safe (How Dangerous Is This Texas Capital City)?
Traveling To Austin, Texas And Wondering If The Downtown Area Is Safe Or Dangerous At Night Or Even During The Day?
I was born in Austin, Texas and returned to the city during and a little after my college years, so I spent a lot of time in the University and downtown areas and usually was fine, but I did encounter some not so safe scenarios so I wouldn’t say this downtown area is the safest and you should definitely practice extra caution when walking around here, especially at night.
๐ Is Downtown Austin, Texas Safe?

Like most larger cities, Austin isn’t always a super safe place in the downtown area and there have been some pretty dangerous events that took place in this Texas city.
Is Austin, Texas Safe At Night?

I never really did feel bad during the day in the University and downtown areas, but it’s a different story at night.
I’ll explain more about my experiences in the next section, but the downtown Austin area is definitely not as safe at night and you should really be careful when out walking, especially alone.
A Few Of My Experiences Here

I lived more in the north part of Austin while I was going to school at the University of Texas so I either had to ride the bus to get down here or find parking if I decided to drive.
I always chose early classes so I was usually out of here by the afternoon, but one semester I did play on an intramural indoor soccer team where games took place after dark so I had to drive down here, park on the street, and walk back and forth from my car and the gym.
One night the game got over close to 10:00pm so I really had to be on high alert as I made the 10-15 minute walk back to my car. The next day I was walking from one of my far away classes to another, when I saw a bunch of cops roping off an area that was awfully close to where I was at the gym the night before.
At around 11:00pm that previous night, a young student was brutally assaulted and murdered right there on campus and I was just a short distance and time away from it. It was awful, but it really made a strong impression on me and made my already alert mind, even more on edge whenever I was out and alone.

During my college years I also did a lot of volunteer work with the homeless, so I know that Austin has a large homeless population and they were nice with the volunteers, but unpredictable when they were on drugs so the entire University and downtown area is not as safe with all of them so close.
More recently, there have also been rumors of a potential serial killer in the downtown Austin area because a lot of bodies have been pulled out of the lake, but there is no confirmation on this.
โ How To Be Extra Safe In Downtown Austin, Texas

I don’t mean to say any of this to deter you from visiting Austin, there are a lot of nice things to see and do in this Texas city, but I do think the downtown and honestly entire area should be visited with extra caution, especially at night and especially for those visiting alone.
To help make your trip to the downtown Austin area extra safe, here are a few suggestions:
- walk around the University of Texas campus during the day to see the famous clock tower and the 40 acres (the name for the UT campus)
- visit downtown Austin sites like museums, Lady Bird Lake, Zilker Park, etc. during the day to be as safe as possible
- stay outside of the downtown area if you want a calmer, more suburb-type of place to sleep (plus it might be a little less expensive depending on the time of year)
- if you want to go out hiking, but you’re by yourself, finding a hiking meetup group can be a good way to explore but not be alone
- to tour the city, even during the day, try finding a guided tour to make transportation easier
- if you want to go out at night, like to Austin’s famous 6th street, avoid going out alone and choose a guided tour like this one to be safer
๐ Sum Up: Is Downtown Austin, Texas Safe?
The downtown area of Austin, Texas hasn’t always been a super safe place and it’s not recommended to go out wandering here alone at night, but if you practice extra caution and are very aware of your surroundings, you shouldn’t have any problems during your visit. Definitely go on a guided tour at night or even during the day to make yourself as safe as possible, and choose group hiking tours over going out to explore on your own even in the natural areas.
