Planning A Trip To The Yucatan Peninsula Of Mexico And Wondering When The Best Time Is To Visit Tulum?

I’ve visited the Riviera Maya area of Mexico a couple of times at different times of year, but my last visit to this region included a stay in Tulum in late fall/early winter, but due to things like weather and crowds, here are a few of the different options for the best time to visit Tulum, Mexico.

๐Ÿ“† When Is The Best Time To Visit Tulum, Mexico?

These are a few reasons why you might want to visit Tulum vs Cancun.

โญ๏ธ Overall, here are a few of the best times to visit Tulum, Mexico (but keep reading for more specific monthly details):

  • โ˜€๏ธ Best time for nicer Weather: January, February, March, and maybe April
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Best time for less Crowds: Summer and Fall (particularly May for a better crowd and weather combo)
  • ๐Ÿค‘ Best time for lower Prices: Summer and Fall (particularly May for cost and weather combo)

โžก๏ธ Need help deciding what to take with you to Tulum? To be prepared for the weather, activities, and rugged terrain, here are some suggestions on what to pack for Tulum

Visiting Tulum In January

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Although average temperatures are pretty consistent year round in Tulum, Mexico, January is one of the better months to visit for a slightly lower range (usually between 84 and 63 degrees) and some of the least average days of rain and lowest humidity levels.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Unfortunately because the weather is nicer, January is also part of the high season in Tulum, so both prices and crowd levels will be higher.

Visiting Tulum In February

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Along with January, February has similar temperatures but an even lower average number of rainy days (which is why it’s considered part of the dry season).

๐Ÿ‘ฅ February also falls into the high season so you can expect to pay more and see more people.

Visiting Tulum In March

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Tulum starts to heat up a little more in March with temperatures ranging from 87 to 67 degrees, but March is still a part of the dry season so rain days are low, although humidity does start to climb.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Because spring break falls into this part of the season, crowds and costs are at their highest, so March is definitely one of the worst times to visit if you want a more budget-friendly, less busy trip to Tulum, Mexico.

Spring might not be the best time to visit Tulum, Mexico because of spring breakers.

Visiting Tulum In April

๐ŸŒก๏ธ As the year goes on, Tulum and the entire Riviera Maya area continues to get hotter and more humid, so April is one of the last months of the year to have a somewhat nicer weather experience.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ But since a lot of spring break vacations also fall in April, it’s still one of the most expensive and crowded times to visit.

Visiting Tulum In May

๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Although average temperatures rise in May (somewhere between 90 and 70 degrees) and humidity is also pretty high, May is the beginning of the offseason and rain averages are still fairly low so it might be one of the best months to visit Tulum, Mexico to have a bit of the best of both worlds.

Visiting Tulum In June

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Both rain averages and temperatures stay fairly high in June, but the big issue is potential hurricane weather, so this month (and the few that follow) could really be a hit or miss in terms of weather.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ The only reason you might want to visit in the hotter summer months like June is because the prices and crowds are lower in comparison.

Here are a few reasons why you might want to choose to visit the Tulum Ruins vs Chichen Itza.

Visiting Tulum In July & August

๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Both July and August are very similar in Tulum, Mexico for temperature averages, rain averages, and humidity, and although prices and crowds are a bit lower, it’s a pretty oppressively miserable kind of heat so you might not want to visit during these incredibly hot months.

Visiting Tulum In September & October

๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฅ September and October only get worse with the average number of rainy days, and both temperatures and humidity percentages stay high, but despite the fewer crowds and lower costs, hurricane season is often most powerful in late fall so plans could unexpectedly get messed up.

Even fall is a hot time to visit Tulum, Mexico.

Visiting Tulum In November

๐ŸŒก๏ธ My last visit to the Riviera Maya area, and Tulum in particular, was in November and despite it saying average temperatures are between 86 and 65 degrees, there was not one moment on my trip that I was not sticky and sweaty. Rainy days and typical humidity percentages drop compared to early fall, but it is still not very pleasant out.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Crowds were definitely less than the previous time I visited in the spring, but there were still plenty of people, and Tulum in general is one of the more expensive places to visit in Mexico, so I wouldn’t call it cheap.

Visiting Tulum In December

๐ŸŒก๏ธ December is starting to get closer to the dry season so rainy days, humidity, and temperatures drop a little, making this month one of the more pleasant times to visit weather-wise.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ In between the holidays from late November and early December, you might find a small break in the crowd sizes and costs, so December might also be one of the better months to visit to get a little of the best of both worlds.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Is It Worth It To Visit Tulum, Mexico?

This is the best time to visit Tulum, Mexico.

The Riviera Maya, and Tulum in particular, aren’t my personal favorite parts of Mexico to visit, but I still have enjoyed my time here, especially at some of the historical sites.

Because it’s closer to Chichen Itza, it has beautiful beaches, and a few interesting sites of its own, I think Tulum can definitely be worth a visit, but I also think it can easily be done in a day so you don’t necessarily have to stay overnight (plus there are plenty of day trip tours here).

๐Ÿ” Sum Up: When Is The Best Time To Visit Tulum, Mexico?

Although the whole year is pretty similar weather-wise in Tulum, Mexico (a very hot and humid jungle), there are a few times of year that might be better for a visit to this Riviera Maya town because of the crowds and the prices (particularly the summer and fall seasons), but storms and rain are also more possible so it just depends on what you’re more willing to deal with.
