Taking A Road Trip Through Texas And Wondering If Waco Is Worth Visiting?

I was born in Austin and also lived in San Antonio so to visit my family in East Texas we would always drive through Waco, and while I loved one Waco site in particular, I don’t think it’s worth visiting for more than a day or so, but below are more details so you can decide for yourself if it will be worth adding to your Texas trip.

๐Ÿงธ Is Waco, Texas Worth Visiting? (Pros & Cons)

The Dr Pepper Museum is one of the best stops to make in this town.

I’ve been through Waco many times on Texas family roadtrips, but never actually stayed overnight, and honestly never had the interest because there are a few things worth seeing here, but it’s not really a city worth visiting for more than a day in my opinion.

โœ… Reasons For Visiting Waco, Texas:

  • The Dr Pepper Museum (pictured above) – my biggest interest in Waco is this museum, and I think it’s worth visiting for everyone to understand how important this drink is to Texans and learn about it right here where it was founded 140+ years ago
  • History – one of Waco’s most famous or infamous historical moments happened in 1993 and is known as the Waco Siege, but there’s not much you can see here anymore; on the other hand the Waco Mammoth National Monument is a fantastic place where you can see fossils of Mammoths that were found right here
  • Cost – compared to bigger cities like Austin or Dallas, Waco is a bit cheaper
  • Texas Culture – you can still get a good taste of Texas culture in Waco with things like BBQ food (one of the most popular is pictured below), horseback riding, or museums like the Texas Sports Hall of Fame
As with most of Texas, one thing that might make Waco worth visiting is the food, particularly BBQ food.

โŒ Reasons Why Visiting Waco, Texas Might Not Be Worth It:

  • there’s not an endless amount of things to see and do here
  • it’s a pretty small city and it’s halfway between two larger Texas cities (Dallas and Austin)
  • although it doesn’t happen every season, Waco can still get tornadoes and it actually holds the record for the deadliest tornado in Texas since the 1900s
  • as with most of Texas, Waco can get pretty miserably hot and humid in the summer

๐Ÿ“† How Many Days Do You Need In Waco, Texas?

In my opinion, you really only need to spend a day here.

If you’re going to be driving right through Waco on a Texas roadtrip and you want a little rest, I think there are a few things worth visiting in this city (like the Dr Pepper Museum, the Silos, Baylor, or the Mammoth Museum), but I don’t think Waco is worth much more than a day or so.

I think you could easily see a majority of the stuff listed above on a day trip or drive through Waco, but if you prefer to stay over I don’t think you’d need more than 2 or 3 days.

๐Ÿ›ฃ How Far Is Waco From Other Texas Locations?

Waco is best as a stop along further Texas roadtrips.

Although Waco does have an airport, you’re likely going to be visiting multiple locations in Texas (like nearby Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio) so here is some info on how far Waco is from these other major cities in Texas:

  • Waco, Texas to Dallas, Texas – Waco is only about an hour and a half from Dallas (about 94 miles), but Dallas traffic and traffic in general on 35 can be awful (especially if they’re doing construction, which it seems like they always are) so it could take longer
  • Waco, Texas to Austin, Texas – down 35 in the other direction, Waco is only about an hour and 40 minutes (about 110 miles) from the capital of Texas
  • Waco, Texas to San Antonio, Texas – continuing through Austin, it takes about 3 hours to get to San Antonio from Waco (just under 200 miles)
  • Waco, Texas to Houston, Texas – heading out a different route, Houston also only takes about 3 hours (180-ish miles) to reach from Waco

๐Ÿ” Sum Up: Is Waco, Texas Worth Visiting?

Unless you’re going for something specific (like a Baylor game), I don’t think Waco is worth staying over for, but I do think it’s worth visiting for a few of its interesting sites (Dr Pepper, Magnolia, Mammoths, etc.), especially if you’re already doing a little Texas roadtrip and are going to be passing through anyways.
