Traveling To San Jose, California And Wondering If The Winchester Mystery House Tour Is Fun, Scary, Or Even Worth Going On?

My first visit to Northern California as an adult (because I went a few times as a kid but don’t remember much) started in the city of San Jose with the number one thing I wanted to see here being the Winchester Mystery House, and although I thought the tour was a little cheesy and not at all scary, I did still enjoy the spooky history of this house.

🏚️ What Is The Winchester Mystery House?

This is a historic house with a haunted past.

The story of the Winchester Mystery House is as interesting and mysterious as the woman who built it.

Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester (widow of William Winchester from the famous gun empire), moved to San Jose, California after both her infant daughter and husband passed away.

She bought an 8-room farmhouse here in 1886, which she did not cease to renovate until her death in 1922. The mansion grew into the peculiar house we know today with some features like 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 160 rooms, 47 stairways, and 6 kitchens.

It's an interesting historical site to see.

The mystery part of the house comes in when considering why she built it and who might have lived here with her (👻).

Many stories exist to explain why this strange wealthy woman built one of the weirdest and most unusual houses, stories revolving around guilt and grief, but no one is truly sure why she did what she did.

The 2018 horror film Winchester takes a shot at explaining the mysteriousness of Sarah and her house while trying to give viewers a little extra fright, and although it’s not the best horror movie I’ve ever seen, I do still recommend watching it before visiting.

👌 Is The Winchester Mystery House Tour Even Worth Doing?

It was a little cheesy, but I thought the Winchester Mystery House Tour was fun and not at all scary.

The Winchester Mystery House is definitely the most touristy things to do in San Jose and the tour can feel a little cheesy, but I think if you learn a little bit about the history beforehand and watch the Winchester movie, it can be a very interesting historical place to visit that’s worth checking out at least once.

They also sometimes have add-ons that let you explore even more of this mystery house so you could get the chance to see some places that many have never been before.

👻 Is The Winchester Mystery House Tour Scary?

Since the Winchester Mystery House is haunted, it's a little spooky, but the tour is not at all scary.

The actual Winchester Mystery House tour is not scary at all in my opinion, because they are only open until 5:00pm so the sunshine does not make it feel very spooky (a rainy day may be better), and I felt like the tour guides tried too hard to make it seem spooky which just made it feel cheesy.

If you’re looking for a non-scary experience, I think you’d be fine on this tour (although they do talk about hauntings, ghosts, paranormal stuff, etc.); if you want a spookier experience I’d say try visiting on a gloomy day and watch the Winchester movie for some extra creepiness before, after, or both.

Is The Winchester Mystery House Really Haunted

It is known as one of the most haunted places in the US.

Despite the sometimes cheesiness of this tourist attraction (and lack of any more scary tour options), the Winchester Mystery House is said to be a very haunted place, in fact it is often mentioned as one of the most haunted places in America.

Both visitors and workers have claimed to have experienced some paranormal activity here from things like hearing footsteps and seeing shadowy figures, to seeing a ghost wheelbarrowing ash or coal from the fireplace.

You may visit like me and not hear or see anything unusual (aside from the strange design of the house), or you may visit and experience the eerier side of the Winchester Mystery House.

🔁 Sum Up: Is The Winchester Mystery House Tour Scary?

Although it’s one of San Jose’s most touristy locations and the tour itself can be a little bit cheesy, the famous Winchester Mystery House is still a very interesting, unique, and spooky place (although I didn’t find the tour scary at all) to visit so I think it’s still a historical site worth visiting at least once (but I do suggest watching the Winchester movie to help get you in the spooky mood).
