I lived in the Coffee Region of Colombia and got pretty used to navigating the safe and dangerous areas of various cities while I traveled around nearly the entire country on my own, and Popayan is no different, there are safe places you should stick to to find a good hotel for your stay here.

Like most cities around Colombia, Popayan has it’s less safe areas that tourists usually wouldn’t go to, but sometimes you can end up in the wrong area without realizing it.
When I traveled to Popayan on my own, I stayed at a hotel a little further away from the main city center because it was cheaper, but even the manager advised me to be careful especially at night, and not go any further south of the hotel (further away from the center).
If you stick to the populated, tourist areas in Popayan (near the city center) and remain aware and cautious especially at night, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Popayan isn’t a huge city so there aren’t endless amounts of good hotel options to choose from, but below are a few popular, safe options near the city center in Popayan:
- Hotel La Plazuela – top rated hotel one block from the main park square and they even have a pizzeria with 100% sourdough/homemade fermented dough
- Hotel Camino Real Popayán Colombia – 4-star hotel with good reviews and right next to the main center square
- Hotel Achalay – a simple and smaller hotel only a block and a half from the main city square
➡️ Looking for another nearby interesting destination? San Agustin isn’t terribly far from Popayan, and it’s a very interesting historical place with ancient statues, an archeological park, and some very adventurous activities

Popayan isn’t usually the most visited tourist destination in Colombia especially for foreigners, but it’s a pretty interesting and beautiful white walled city that is definitely worth checking out if you’re already nearby. You don’t need much time to explore Popayan, but because of travel times, I suggest getting a hotel in a safe area for a night or two, and then continuing on to explore more of Colombia.
