Traveling To Colombia And Looking To Visit Some Historical Sites, But Wondering Where Exactly Did The Famous Liberator, Simon Bolivar, Die And How Can You Visit This Location?

One of the main reasons I was interested in living in Colombia was because of my love for history and the fact that I studied a lot about Colombian history in college, so checking out all the places related to Simon Bolivar (like the place where he did die, but isn’t buried) was at the top of my list during my time living here.

🤺 Who Was Simon Bolivar?

He is basically the George Washington of a few South American countries.

In Short – if you’re not super familiar with Simon Bolivar, he was basically the George Washington figure of multiple countries fighting for their independence from the Spanish.

In More Detail – Simon Bolivar was a Venezuelan military leader that became the face for the independence fight against the Spanish colonizers in what is today Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Panama.

Bolivar became known as El Libertador (the liberator) because of his actions against the Spanish, and even served as president for his dream of a unified Latin America in what was called Gran Colombia (but this state failed the year after his death).

🪦 Where & How Did Simon Bolivar Die?

Although the circumstances about how Simon Bolivar did die are still up for debate, some say he died of tuberculosis while some say at the hands of his enemies, where he died is irrefutable.

On December 17th, 1830, Simon Bolivar died at The Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino (an hacienda) in the coastal town of Santa Marta, Colombia.

Where Is Simón Bolívar Buried?

You can visit the place where Simon Bolivar did die but is no longer buried.

Although Simon Bolivar did die in Colombia and he was buried here for a little while (for about 12 years), he was moved to Caracas, Venezuela as requested by the president and is now buried at the National Pantheon there.

You can even visit the place where Simon Bolivar did die from Cartagena on a day trip.

If you love history and are already going to be on the north Caribbean side of Colombia, I highly recommend checking out the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino (where Simon Bolivar did die in 1830).

➡️ If you’re staying in Santa Marta – it’s super easy to visit the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino on your own (although it is inland away from the main hotel areas, so it’s usually best to get an Uber over a taxi in Colombia)

➡️ Also from Santa Marta – you may also be able to find city tours that include a stop to the Quinta so that way you don’t have to try to get to it on your own

➡️ From Cartagena – when was living in Colombia I took a trip to Cartagena, but wanted to see Santa Marta and Barranquilla too so I found a day trip tour that took me to places all over both locations from Cartagena (I found mine when I was in the country, but maybe you can find options online that include what you want to see)

Although Simon Bolivar was born in Venezuela, this liberating hero spent a lot of time in Colombia so there are other places in the country related to him that you can visit:

no matter what city or town you go to in Colombia, you’ll find at the center a little park and maybe a statue named after Simon Bolivar, but Bogota has one of the best and biggest

also in Bogota is one of the former homes of Simon Bolivar, now turned into a museum (here’s a comparison between Cartagena and Bogota to help you decide which to visit)

not to mention all of the place names that have been named after the revolutionary war hero like the state department of Bolivar, the town in Santander called Bolivar, the town of Bolivar in the Valle de Cauca department, and the mountain peak Pico Simon Bolivar near Santa Marta
